Q: Are a Trans am and a Firebird the same thing?
Obviously the firebird is on the hood, but why two names? Was the Firebird a model of the trans am, like the Stingray was a model of the corvette?

A: Trans Am is nothing but an option package on a normal Firebird. There are no fundimental differences in the car, just engine power, tires, and suspension adjustments. You also get slightly different exterior and interior trim to set it apart. You could generally create the level of performance in a normal car by selecting separate options like upgraded engine and handling suspensions.

Q: What are the stock speaker specs for a 1997 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am?
I have been looking for hours to find out what kind of speakers I have in my car from the factory. It is a 1997 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am convertible. They are 6″ round speakers, not 6.5″ but I am looking for the ohm rating, wattage, etc. If anyone knows where to find this information, please reply, thanks!!!

A: On most “factory” speakers if you remove them, the info your looking for is on the back of the magnet.

Q: The power windows of my 1977 Trans Am are moving very slowly and they get stuck?
The power windows of my 1977 Trans Am are moving very slowly and they get stuck, I have to help them with my hands. Is there a simple remedy for this or is it a common problem in which my power window motor must be replaced?

A: being that old the window motors are probably getting weak and need replaced but you can take the inner door panels off and try lubing up the window channels with lithium grease first to see if that helps the problem.

Q: What exhaust sounds best on 1998 Trans Am Firebird?
What exhaust sounds best on 1998 Trans Am Firebird?
I want something deep sounding, not loud idling.
Flowmaster, MagnaFlow, Borla? I heard you lose power with Flowmaster, is that true with any exhaust?
Would it be better to just get muffler or what would benefit be to get catback also?

A: id throw on a magnaflow catback or a glass pack cherry bomb

Q: Is there a significant performance difference between a ls1 Pontiac Trans Am and a ls1 Pontiac Firehawk?
SLP claims that the Firehawk is more powerful than a Trans Am. Is the difference in performance of the two vehicles noticeable?

A: T/A
305 hp at 5,200 rpm; 335 ft·lbf (454 N·m)
SLP Firehawk
330 hp (335 after 2000, 345 in late 2002 models equipped with the optional Blackwing intake.)

I’ve ridden in,drove and tuned the pcm’s in both. I wouldn’t pay a large premium for a firehawk over a T/A unless your wanting a collector or something.
The firehawk is a T/A with bolt ons and a tune. Buy the T/A and spend the cash you save on the bolt on’s you prefer instead.
Firehawk is a sweet car though,if the difference was a couple thousand and they were both clean I would buy the firehawk over the T/A IF I had the money to burn anyway.
just to be different.

Q: I have a 1995 Pontiac Trans Am and I keep ripping transmission mounts. What can I do?
I have a 1995 Pontiac Trans Am with the LT1 350 I was wondering why I keep ripping transmission mounts? I am on my 3rd trans mounts now and am sick of having replace them. I do get on it sometimes but dont think that would rip them that fast. Now they are the OEM mounts but I dont know if anyone can help that would be great thank you.

A: The only way you can rip a tranny mount that bad, is if the engine motor mounts have so much play that the motor lifts up high enough to tear a tranny mount. What you are talking about is physically impossible if the driver side engine mount is not damaged, the tranny has to lift, and twist at the same time to do this. I suggest you pull the driver side motor mount off, its torn in half, but with a ton of motor you cant tell. I check used truck motor mounts in the past, the torque which goes in the direction the fan spins, can tear in half. put it in reverse, and keep the emergency brake on, and with your foot hard on the brakes (so you don’t kill the guy with his head under the open hood, step on the gas slowly increasing rpm, if the motor mount is bad, the engine will lift up on the driver side.(only works in reverse). Old motor mounts get loose too, the only other option is some 500 plus hp engine, which in that case you put in some good motor mounts, and then chain the thing down with some hardened chain from the hardware store.

Q: What can I get for exhaust on a Trans Am?
I’m buying a ‘97 trans am and i’m wanting to what exactly I need to put on it to make it sound really nice. It already has a flowmaster muffler and thats it. The car wasn’t really loud with it on. The car also doesn’t have any headers. I’m pretty sure its a y pipe. What exactly do I need? I don’t no much so something clearly explained would be appreciated.

Q: How do I swap out my instrument panel bulbs for blue LED ones? 1997 Pontiac Trans Am?
I have a 1997 Pontiac Trans Am, I really think the red lights on the instrument panel are pretty dull. So I was going to first figure out how to remove the panel itself and then replace the bulbs in there now with blue LED’s. So could anyone help me as to how to do either of those two things?

A: You first need to open up the cluster panel in order to remove all the bulbs in behind.

Most likely, you will need about 5 to 8 pairs the T5 LED bulbs in Ultra Blue and I will recommend you the the much bright and wider angle shining 5050-type SMD T5 LED bulbs.

Be careful when you open up the cluster panel, make sure to disconnect all the wires at the back gently because if the wire is broken, you will end up with no lights at all (I have had that problem before)

You can search on google for ijdmtoy.com/how and find the picture installation guide for how to install the Blue LED cluster bulbs.

Q: tiny bit confused. How do the radiator get air on a 1993-2002 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am without a grill?
Every front engine car I know has a grill with openings so air can get to the radiator but the 1993-2002 Trans Am don’t. So how does the radiator stay cool with no air flowing through it?

A: The same way the previous generation got air, from underneath. There’s a big plastic air dam underneath the radiator support that directs air up into the radiator and condenser.

BTW, there are PLENTY of cars that done have front grilles to allow air to hit the front of the radiator(my 89 Trans Am and C5 ‘vette being two).

Q: About How much horsepower more would I get if I put some headers on a 2000 Trans Am?
On ebay it says this :P acesetter Long Tube Headers – 98-02 Camaro/Trans am

Starting with 3/8″-thick steel plate and 1-3/4″-diameter carbon steel alloy tubing, each header is precision-crafted to insure proper fit and seal. The mandrel-bent tubing insures maximum flow to the 3″-diameter collector and on into the mandrel-bent Y-pipe. These headers replace the stock cast iron exhaust manifolds and have provisions for all smog and engine management hook-ups.

Includes: Off-road Y-pipe, clamps, O2 extension kit, fasteners and gaskets. About how much more horsepower would i get from putting this on a Trans am?

A: Is it a 3.8 or a 5.0? If it is the v-8, is it an Ls1? Hard to say if I do not know the engine size!

Q: Where can I find the electrical piece that the middle console window switches connects to on a 1979 Trans Am?
There’s a small piece that is crucial that goes onto the middle console window switch on a 1979 Trans Am. This piece is formed for wires to fit into it and it’s then plugged into the middle console window switch. We’ve lost this piece, and we can’t find it. Where can I get it? Or what is it called, and or the part #.

A: You will most likely need to go to a GM Pontiac dealer parts department, if they can’t get it, they may be able to steer you in the right direction to find it.

Q: anyone has tips on changing spark plugs on an 88 trans am?
Does anyone has any good tips for changing the spark plugs on a 1987 trans am gta with a 350 tpi engine. there is no room and i need a little help.

A: The easiest way I have found is to crawl under the car and change the back plugs from underneath. It is a huge pain but it is one of the joys of the cars. Just change all the plugs that you can get to from the top and the ones that you just can not reach change from the bottom.

Also no you can not change them through the inner fenders there are no holes to get to the plugs it will not work.

Q: How can I increase the efficiency/mpg of my 1978 Trans Am?
I bought my 78 Trans Am and I couldn’t be any happier, but I know that the price of gas won’t be this low for very long, so i want to increase the 14 mpg i get right now. Everything in the 400 is stock except for the cam. How could I increase the MPG? Could I install an EFI system? I’ve also heard that the exhaust is extremely restrictive in these cars. If I were to install a new exhaust system would I lose MPG while gaining HP?

A: Anything you are willing to do to make your car inhale or exhale better will give you more power and increase mpg. A cold air intake, or even just a K and N air filter, and a cat back exhaust is a good place to start. I put a performance chip in my 01 Trans Am and gained noticeable power and mpg gains. None of these things are cheap so you’ll want to weigh the benefits against the cost of upgrading. For me the performance gains to be had by installing these simple bolt ons is worth the price. Any MPG gains are only a bonus!!!!!

Q: Why is that the bird on the Trans Am, some point to the passenger side and others to the driver.?
I have a 1980 S.E. Trans Am and it points to the passenger side however from the looks of the after market replacement birds they point to the drivers side

A: I’m almost positive the original bird looks to the drivers side, however most people arent keen enough to notice this slight difference.
